10 things you should definitely know before toileting training:
- Toilet Training depends far more on DEVELOPMENT then AGE.
- Know your child’s patterns! – Start documenting when your child voids in their diaper or pull up.
- Be prepared to become very familiar with your bathroom- you’ll be spending a lot of time in there.
- Make your bathroom a reinforcing area for your child- play music, read books, wall paper your walls with paw patrol wallpaper…ok, don’t go that far, but make it so your child wants to be in there!
- Toilet training is a team sport-have support!
- Say goodbye to diapers (and pull ups) and hello to underwear.
- ….Like, seriously dump the diapers!
- Bigger is better in regard to toilet training. Avoid using child-sized potty chairs and start right away with the “Big” potty!
- The prize for voiding on the potty must be the BEST THING EVER for you child! You’ll be throwing lots of potty parties for voiding in the potty.
- Your child needs to learn this vital skill for independence and quality of life, so whatever you do, don’t give up!!!!
One of the biggest milestones for any preschool aged child is graduating from diapers and moving on to using the potty! The road to having a toilet trained child can be a long one, and even longer when attempting to toilet train a child with Autism or a child with disability. Some children grasp this skill quickly, while other children convince you they will head off to college in their diapers. It requires time, patience, and repetition.
The techniques of Applied Behavior Analysis can be used to train even the most stubborn child to use the potty. The ABA method uses component of traditional toilet training and adds structure and consistency to the process. Toilet training the ABA way may be the method you need to take your potty resistant child, and turn them into a potty aficionado.
